You still need to read and get dressed there, though. The answer is several separately controlled sources rather than one bright fitting overhead.

Warm light is the rule

A bedroom suits warm white 2700–3000 K. Cooler light (4000 K and above) suppresses melatonin in the evening and makes falling asleep harder. Save cooler light for a wardrobe or make-up corner where colour accuracy matters. See how to choose colour temperature.

How much light does a bedroom need?

Area

Recommended level

Bedroom, ambient light

150–200 lm/m²

Reading light by the bed

300–500 lm as a spot

Wardrobe, dressing area

300–400 lm/m²

The bedroom needs the least ambient light in the house. A 14 m² room × 175 lm/m² ≈ 2450 lumens — and even that is better split between several sources. See lumens and watts.

Indirect light is the most restful option

Indirect light does not hit your eyes directly — it bounces off the ceiling or a wall. In a bedroom that is the most comfortable approach, because lying in bed you never look straight into a light source.

A LED strip SOFT, 24VDC, 9.6W/m behind the headboard or in a cornice, bouncing light off the wall.

The strip in an Profile Siler with a diffuser so no dots show.

Perimeter cornice lighting replaces a bright ceiling fitting very well.

Avoid downlights directly above the bed — lying down, they shine straight into your eyes.

Reading light

Reading needs directed light that does not disturb the person next to you. A wall light above the bed or an adjustable spot works. The light must fall on the book, not in your eyes, and the switch must be reachable without getting up.

Dimming

The bedroom is where dimming pays off most: the same fitting serves both getting dressed and winding down. Check that the fitting or strip is marked dimmable and that the driver is compatible with the dimmer — otherwise the light flickers or does not work at all.

Common mistakes

One bright ceiling fitting and nothing else.

Cool light at 4000 K or above — it makes sleep harder.

Downlights directly above the bed.

A reading light switched from the door.

Forgetting dimming at the planning stage.

For the logic of light layers in general, see lighting layout.

Related products

LED strip SOFT, 24VDC, 9.6W/m

Profile Siler

Ceiling light GU10

Which colour temperature suits a bedroom?

Warm white 2700–3000 K; cooler light in the evening makes falling asleep harder.

How much light does a bedroom need?

150–200 lm/m² ambient and 300–500 lm as a reading spot.

Do downlights work in a bedroom?

Yes, but not directly above the bed — lying down they shine into your eyes.

What is indirect light?

Light bounced off a ceiling or wall so the source itself stays out of view.

Is dimming worth it in a bedroom?

Yes, this is the room where dimming pays off most.

The bedroom is the one room where the goal is not maximum brightness but calm, soft light.
