Colour temperature is measured in kelvins (K) and decides whether light looks warm or cool. It has no effect on brightness — only on how a room feels.
What kelvin means

For living spaces: 2700–3000 K
Warm light is closest to the old incandescent bulb — relaxing and inviting. It is the default for bedrooms and living rooms, especially in the evening.
For kitchens and desks: 3500–4000 K
Neutral white keeps you alert and renders colours accurately — important where you cook or work. Pay attention to CRI 90+ here too, otherwise food and materials look wrong.
For technical spaces: 5000–6500 K
Cool light is energising and reveals detail, but it makes living rooms feel clinical. Keep it for the garage, workshop and storage areas.
How to avoid mistakes
- Keep one colour temperature per room — mixing looks careless.
- The later in the evening a light is used, the warmer it should be.
- Work out the brightness first: lumens and watts.
