LED saves electricity through efficiency, not by being dimmer: more lumens per watt. At the same light output, consumption drops 75–85 % compared with halogen and incandescent lamps.
Where the saving comes from
An incandescent lamp turns only about 5 % of its energy into light; the rest becomes heat. LED is far better. The key figure is lm/W (lumens per watt) — the higher, the more efficient.

What it means in euros
Example: a 60 W fitting running 4 hours a day uses ~88 kWh a year. An 8 W LED uses ~12 kWh. That is ~76 kWh saved per lamp per year. Multiply by the number of lamps in the house and you reach tens — often over a hundred — euros a year.
How fast does it pay off?
In heavily used rooms (kitchen, living room) an LED typically pays for itself in a few months. In rarely used spaces the payback is longer, but replacing there is not urgent either.
How to save even more
- Light by zones instead of one powerful lamp for the whole room.
- Dimming — lower brightness directly lowers consumption.
- Motion sensors in hallways and utility rooms.

Does colour temperature affect consumption?
